No Beer Don't Read
The Young Blades now played three, won three in the Group Stage. On balance, that's a flattering scoreline against Michael Tonge’s Huddersfield Town B outfit. There were stages in the first half when United were rather sloppy. Just 2-1 up at the half. It was far from all over then. But it was by 65 minutes - 5-2.
A number of people have asked me about Louie Marsh recently. He was on the TV celebrating after the win at Bristol City. He was on the TV celebrating after the Derby Day win. He's with the First Team. He's just not making the bench.
Louie was out there tonight. As was Luke Faxon, who has been on the First Team bench. And, will I believe, continue to travel with the First Team as third keeper. And another run out for Tom Davies. A full ninety tonight. And a great goal an’ all.
Luke Faxon keeping. Back four - Jack Waldron, Evan Easton, Zain Tahir, Harry of Boyes. Jevan Beattie up top. And (again) quite attacking behind him. Aston pushed up right. Owen Hampson pushed up left. Marsh roving. Davies and Billy Blacker more anchors in midfield, but not shy getting forward.
Tinsdale for Aston and Francis for Beattie on 71. Atherton for Hampson on 79. And Sam Colechin for Waldron at the death.
United started like a house on fire. Beattie having a shot saved in the first minute. A good left wing move, Beattie to Hampson, a clumsy challenge, and a rather soft penalty. Marsh converted. 1-0. Only 5 minutes gone.
More or less immediately, there was a classic Louie Marsh unlock the defence pass to Beattie. He tried to take too many touches and the chance was lost.
But, after about 20 minutes, United went off the boil a bit. Even becoming a bit sloppy and Hudds got back into it. And. Lo. Another clumsy challenge. Another soft penalty. This time to Town. Luke saved that well. But there was no United youngster near the rebound. One each.
Beattie was, unusually, not getting anything going up top tonight. There was very little link up play with Marsh. And I felt United might be better abandoning some of the mad attacking positions and shore up midfield a bit.
I cheered up IMMENSELY on 36. A great flowing move down the left involved Blacker, Hampson and Beattie. That released Marsh. He calmly slotted it home for his second. And immediately, Waldron to Davies, clever ball to Aston. But he was too hurried and missed his kick.
Right before the half, Blacker hit the top of the bar.
Just after HT, Marsh had a shot (it was on target, the Carrier Bag Firm were right in line) half blocked, and it bounced high and into the goal for his Hat Trick.
Huddersfield pulled one back on 54. But from the kick off great link up play by Marsh released Blacker. He got a bit of a lucky bounce, that allowed him to take the ball on, and he buried it. 4-2.
Beattie got his goal on 64. As United started to run away with it. A lovely right wing cross from Aston. Beattie with a one touch to trap and turn. And then powerful finish.
That great Davies goal on 71. True. The half cleared corner looped and fell nicely for him. But, all about the technique from there. A clean as a very clean thing strike into the corner. Marshall Francis with the seventh.
Deserved win. But maybe not by that score.
Rumours persist that Sam Aston and Kurtis Havenhand are going to Derbyshire to play for Sheffield FC for a while. See if that happens.
