Marcus, on his return, wondering where all the usual beer cocks are.
The potatoes are moulding. That is to explain, the potatoes are in the mould. Mould, it transpires, rhymes with cold. Giving the etymology of …
"It was Taters at North Ferriby"
It. Was. Cold. In rhyming slang. As per, the Carrier Bag Firm were pitchside. The snap of the linos boots as he lolloped up n down, sounded more like a 4g pitch than grass and mud. I couldn't quite tell, but maybe the officials were out at half time checking whether it was too frozen to continue.
If you cared to stay in the Clubhouse for Bovril, you would have also had the opportunity at Great Newsome Brewery, Sleck Dust on Cask at 3.8%.
Current third available choice MrGloverMan Marcus Dewhurst was on the pitch at Bramall Lane on Saturday (v Stoke) warming up with Wes & Adam & The Duke of Matt. And, Marcus got the gig here at North Ferriby, within walking distance of his Mum's house. Matt Duke was also shivering on the sidelines. Maybe keeping an eye on the laddo. Or maybe he's just ex-Hull and fancied a Sleck Dust.
Potter in the middle, Pitan on his right, Gomis lefting. Sai Sachdev, with a full Phantom of the Opera mask protecting his sneezing equipment, wide right. Jill Buyabu wide left. Busy Bee Staniland in front of them. Owen Hampson right mid. Andre Brooks mid left. Will Osula returning up top. Short sleeved white away shirt, over long sleeved white skin thingy, gloves, and constantly pulling his sleeves down to get even warmer in the general wrist area. Louie Marsh partnering up top. Huzzah. I prefer him in that role to the more withdrawn role they've tried him in recently.
That said, Louie didn't particularly shine. Don't misunderstand, he played well enough. But, below the level we have seen.
Have I given enough clues yet as to how fucking cold it was? Not a good night for making detailed scouting notes in the black book. So, forgive me, you're going to get a flavour report, not a full-blown.
Wigan hammered Brum in their game. This - about right - draw with t'Tigers, puts us seven points clear of Wigan, and we've played a game less.
I felt the Young Blades were a bit more switched on and busy than the previous games this week. Less frantic with the ball (good), but more energetic and committed without it (gooderer). The top two and Hampson looking to close down quickly, turn defenders & tie them deep into their own half. Staniland also bang at it, taking the short route to any Hull ball carriers
A bit scrappy at the back at times, too much reliance on longer balls, but Sachdev & Buyabu were threats outside. We started the game nice & composed and willing to build from the back, although a bit too eager to just go square.
Great opening goal on 22. I counted Hampson involved three times. He wins a header just in the attacking half, Marsh cushions it back to him, first time pass to Will O coming towards him, back to goal. Will also first times it back into Owen's stride. A coupla touches until he loops it back to Osula running channel right. Calm powerful finish from Will. Lovely move.
We had a great 15 mins after that. Always looking to be involved. Closing. There was an oooohhhh look at that quick feet interplay between Marsh and Hampson. Eventually it was worked wide to Jili, but he overhit.
But, a VERY untidy goal on 38 undid all that. Hull had been doing chaos corners, packing the six yards. They swung this one in similarly. Initially cleared off the line by a defender, Marcus then came at it with his feet, hit numerous, bundled in. Fuck sake.
Hull perked up after half time. Their winger did Sachdev, twice. Dewhurst was caught a bit in the land of no man. But as the ball hit the net, the lino flagged offside.
The game & my note taking flagged as the ice flowed into veins. As I said, draw about right.
Despite everything, there was a drink, and it was disappointingly ordinary.

Yeah. A sheltering from the cold Ale. Won't kill you. Won't smack yer lips neither.
