There's No Cricketer Called Andrew Hire
Yorkshire 386 for 6
v Warwickshire
County Championship Division One
Friday 12 June 2026
Played at Scarborough
Yorkshire back to County Championship action at the newly three sided Scarborough. In case you didn't hear, it was announced in February that the stand at the Peasholm Park End of the North Marine Road ground has been deemed unsafe for spectators.
Cricket fans' loss has been Andy Hire’s gain. Look, I know how this Blog works. Yes, yes, yes I have tried to find a Cricketer called Andrew Hire, or even just any Cricketer with the surname Hire. So I can write one of my oh so hilarious spoofy things linking a barely heard of ex-player to the fences cordoning off the PP End.
We are where we are. And this is all to do with Cricket Finance. County Cricket Clubs, like Yorkshire, need grounds to play on. Local Cricket clubs, like Scarborough, don't generate enough income to maintain cricket grounds suitable for Yorkshire to play on. Yorkshire won't pay Scarborough to maintain the ground.
Some people will say - it's not as simple as that Phil. Is.
Today, the other stands in the ground didn't feel extra busy because one stand is condemned. And surely that is again down to our old friend finance. Over the years, Scarborough Cricket have tried to generate income from these games, which they could use to maintain facilities. That basically means - putting the prices up.
An on the day, pay at the gate ticket has now reached £33. And that is high in comparison to other County Championship games. I'm hoping to go to Leicestershire for a Yorkshire away game next weekend. I'm expecting to pay just £15.
That thirty three notes price is not going to have the casual punters flocking in to fill the stands that haven't been condemned yet!!!
The Bears won the Toss and stuck Yorkshire in. Yorkshire reached all the necessary milestones. Saw the Bowlers off to the first change without losing a wicket. Got to fifty. Got to a Hundred. Didn't quite get to Lunch. Adam Lyth gone at 102 for 1. But them's the numbers. Tricky, but weathered it. Have to cash in after that.
Will Luxton and Sam Whiteman were excellent. Taking it out to 192 for 2. And Yorkshire were only three down by the time Will Luxton reached his first ever First Class Century. To exactly no rapturous applause from the Peasholm Park End.
Yorkshire's overall run rate of clicks over four was decent. Bairstow tried to put the hammer down. Which the conservative me felt was a little unnecessary. But he's still there on 49 off 44. Luxton and Cliff went late on. But, sent in to bat, best part of 400, some batters still to come. Great day for YCCC and Will Luxton in particular.
I'm afraid you're going to have to put up with a bit of weird beer blogging at the moment. I put a big shift in on beers in Spain recently. So now I'm having to dig in and slow down a bit. Despite the fact I'm in Scarborough, N Yorks. I'm going to tease you with beers from Benidorm, Valencian Community.

Excellent. Lovely, lovely balance. Just enough bitter orange juice to go around. Tingling on the tongue.

Love Scarbados, but I wouldn’t pay £33 for a day of county cricket. It only costs me £15 at the Oval.
