Ground Tick #510
The Carrier Bag Firm had already been representing at Barnsley U21s in the afts. I've had Athersley’s Sheerien Park on my radar before. But. You know. Lazy. It's a bit of a trek by public transport for a night game. The fact that I was in Barnsley already gave me the kick up the arse I needed to get out here. For the 510th different ground I have watched a game on.
Oh. And. We're not fucking playing at it. On the way to Sheerien Park, we visited;
Nailmaker Brewing Co
Unit 9, Darton Business Park, Barnsley Rd, Darton, Barnsley S75 5NH
The brewery dog barks a reasonably friendly woof at you from the office as you come in through the door. An impromptu sign on the door warns you he's nervous.
Same Bro’. It's a bit early. Hope they're open…
You walk into a lovely functional room. The Waterton’s Reserve Gin distillery is off on the right. And the brewery and bar are off on the left. It's a neat arrangement actually. The main room is nice and warm. And benefits from being separate from the colder for obvious reasons working brewery.
There were four Cask handpulls on the bar front. And a few off to the side on Keg. Every member of staff was willing and able to explain the beers. They didn't make you feel they were talking from a memorised script. And they didn't make you feel they were bamboozling you with technical shittery. They made you feel they were nice and friendly and knew what they were talking about and how to explain it.
Nailmaker Brewing Company, Wapentake, Pale Ale on Cask at 3.8%
Cascade and American Chinook Hops. A surprising amount of toffee biscuit for your hooter glands. That isn't in the taste. Which is very clean and crisp. Moreish. Quaffable. Easy and light.
Nailmaker Brewing Company. Citra Pale Ale on Cask at 4.2%
Nice and opaque and inviting. It didn't quite live up to its looks. Indeed, it felt a bit hop underpowered.
Nailmaker Brewing Company, Cardinal Sin, Pale Ale on Cask at 4.4%
Cardinal Hops. Nice and malty leading into those.
A rather easy, and certainly regulation, win for the home team. Shelley were just never in it at all. On a damp and misty night. Athersley were two up inside ten minutes. Very difficult for Shelley from that. And it was all very comfortable in the end.
